Stepping up to the Plate – SMM Daylong Gathering 2017

Wednesday November 8th, 2017
Hutchinson Center
Belfast, ME
8:15-3:30 p.m.

REGISTRATION IS OPEN!

Join us at our November 8th SMM daylong gathering, with the theme of “Stepping Up to the Plate.” We’ll be sharing the importance of relationships in building local food systems and the communities that they serve, reflecting our sense that all of us, wherever we live – consumers, activists, funders, political leaders, buyers, producers and more – need to broaden, deepen and strengthen roles in building local food economies that reflect courage, action, risk and engagement.

Though SMM has catalyzed over $13mm into Maine’s food economy, the underlying impact of our work is in relationships that don’t often translate to metrics. However, they are important elements that connect us to the earth, to producers, businesses and communities in ways that result in vibrant, enlivening social and economic lives. These are what we’re building to replace an industrialized, multi-national consolidated food system that still dominates our lives.

Our keynote speaker Judy Wicks, author of Good Morning Beautiful Business, will share with us her love of people, place, nature and business, as demonstrated in pioneering endeavors with local living economies, from the White Dog Cafe and Fair Food Philly to BALLE, and in moving money to place-based investments.

In our morning session, entitled “Staying the Course”, we will have an on-stage conversation between a farmer and buyer that have worked together for over 20 years and a grain processor and beer company brew-master that have partnered for a few years, with
plans for expanding grain growing in Maine to meet increasing demands. There will also be a longtime SMM investor/mentor in the conversation, as well as audience participation.

After a fabulous locally sourced lunch made from the fruits of many of our network participants’ labors, we’ll bring everyone together to hear briefly about some innovative community/food partnerships (such as a refugee farmer’s CSA being part of a weekly pizza special at a local wood-fired pizza restaurant). One breakout session will follow, for people to talk about producer-buyer relationships, and another will give time to share gleaning projects going on throughout the state.
